Below is a list of accomplishments we used to compile before we moved to the social media accounts for accolades:
Spring 2014:
Dr. John Barnett was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship for research in Vietnam. He will visit Vietnam during his sabbatical leave in spring 2015.
Dr. Charles Brown won the President's Award for Research and Creativity in 2014.
Dr. Charles Brown was named the Roe R. Cross Distinguished Professor for 2014.
Dr. Darla Mallein is principle grant writer and project director of Emporia State University’s No Child Left Behind Improving Teacher Quality competitive grant proposal entitled UPSCALE: Using Primary Source Material Collaboratively to Achieve Literacy Standards for Everyone, chosen by the Kansas Board of Regents for funding in the amount of $102,000.
Dr. Brian Miller has been named General Editor of the journal Civil War History. He will serve as editor for the next five years. Dr. Miller published "Traumatized Manhood: Confederate Amputees in History, Memory, and Hollywood" in Lawrence Keiser and Randal Allred, eds., The Civil War in Popular Culture: Memory and Meaning (University of Kentucky Press, 2014). He also delivered a lecture on Lincoln in memory in Hays, KS after helping the Public Library there secure a grant to get a traveling NEH exhibit on the Constitution.
Michael Smith and Kevin Anderson presented Breakdown, Take Me through the Day: Teaching Constitution Day to Middle- and High-School Students with Short Breakout Sessions, at the American Political Science Association Teaching & Learning Conference in February. Michael and colleagues were featured on KPR
Dr. Joyce Thierer won the 2014 Ruth Schillinger award for Outstanding Service to the women of Emporia State University. In January Dr. Thierer received the Grassland Award from Wabaunsee County Conservation District for her work to restore grasslands on her property.
Dr. Brian Miller and Dr. Deb Gerish won awards for their contributions to the university's assessment program.
Fall 2013:

Dr. Miller published "Film Roundtable: Lincoln: in Civil War History 59(3): 358-75, September 2013.
Dr. Greg Schneider published Rock Island Requiem: The Collapse of a Mighty Fine Line (University Press of Kansas), released on September 10, 2013.
Dr. Schneder received the Richard Overton fellowship from the Lexington Group of Transportation Historians to support research for his new book on the railroad industry and government between WWI and WWII.
Dr. Joyce Thierer is the Program Chair for the Kansas Association of Historians.
Summer 2013:
Dr. Chris Lovett received a summer OOE grant for his research project titled “The Malmedy Massacre Hearings and Joe McCarthy’s First War on the U.S. Army.”
Dr. Darla Mallein was awarded her fourth “Teaching with Primary Sources” workshop grant for $24,000 from the Library of Congress.
Dr. Brian Miller was awarded a summer OOE grant for travel to Burbank, California, for research on “Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln,” a project on construction of memory and perceptions of Lincoln.
Dr. Greg Schneider was awarded the first ever John H. White, Jr., Research Fellowship ($2500) from the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society to support his next book project, Government Rails: American Railroads in Depression, Prosperity and War, 1917-1945. Dr. Schneider also received an Earhart Foundation for summer research travel in support of this project.
December 2012 and January 2013: Michael Smith and John Barnett (with Social Sciences alumnus Jared Larson) participated in an international trip to Paraguay under the auspices of the Center for Information and Resources for Development, with funding from the United States Agency for International Development. Participation on the trip was
Amanda Miracle, Phil Kelly, Michael Smith, Karen Smith, Ellen Hansen, and Rob Catlett planned and participated in the “Perspectives on Liberty: Bill of Rights to Civil Rights” event that brought about 75 high school students to campus on February 27, 2013. Master of Arts in History students Steven Bellavia and Lori Enicks-Kniss presented their papers on George Mason, Father of the Bill of rights and submitted papers to compete for the $5,000 Colonial Dames Scholarship. The scholarship was awarded to Steven Bellavia, who was honored at the Colonial Dames luncheon and awards ceremony in April 2013.
January 2013

Dr. Brian Miller: did an interview with the Civil War Monitor magazine; it is available
Dr. Brian Miller presented a paper at the American Historical Association meeting in New Orleans on January 3, entitled “Positioning the Empty Sleeve in the Postwar South.” He gave a lecture in Concordia, KS, on January 7, about the Civil War, and presented in the Social Sciences Colloquium Series
Dr. Ellen Hansen: Book chapter titled “Women at the U.S.-Mexico Border,” co-authored with Dr. Janice Monk, was published in Geography and Social Justice in the Classroom, T.W. Kenreich, ed., Routledge Press Series on Research in Education (New York: Routledge, 2013).
Dr. Michael Smith returned safely from a terrific trip to Paraguay in December; Dr. John Barnett went on the same trip in January 2013, along with Dr. Ed Flentje of Wichita State and alumnus Jared Larson. Dr. Barnett and Mr. Larson went on a side trip to Iguazu Falls on the border between Paraguay and Brazil.
December 2012

Drs. Michael Smith and John Barnett and students Charles Chiddix, Mark Bowman, Karly Kennedy and Brittany Davis went to the Dole Institute post-election conference.
Dr. Smith, with co-authors Kevin Anderson and Chap Rackaway presented a paper titled "Was the Vote Suppressed in 2012? A Tentative Look at The Impact of Voter-Suppression Laws in the 2012 Presidential Election" at the Northeastern Political Science Association conference in Boston.

Joyce Thierer: Consultant to National Park Service on Junior Master of the Santa Fe Trail: An Education Activity Program. Contributed “Join the Wagon Train – Wagon Ho!” (pg. 100), two more in
November 2013. Jacque Fehr was promoted to Administrative Specialist in her 39th year of service to Emporia State University and the Department of Social Sciences.
ALUMNI
Chris Hunter (BA History 2008),
Zach Wimmer (BSE Social Sciences 2010; MA History 2012) is the winner of the 2012 Boylan Thesis Award for his thesis titled “Out of the Dust: The Civilian Conservation Corps in Kansas” (May 2012).
MA History student Dana Carter has been selected to present a paper at the January meeting of the Kansas Corral of Westerners. This paper came out of her research for the Country Folk and the Land class in history.
Woojoo Kim (2009, Political Science) is now at University of Washington and was just awarded an internship position at the Center
Mark Daniels (2001, Social Sciences Education) was Social Studies Teacher of the Year in 2008 in his school district in Florida and also honored by the Florida Council for the Social Studies. He wrote: “It all comes from that good ESU background.” He is managing a Teaching American History grant for his school district, doing historical performances, and writing a book about teaching methods.
